Why innovation? It’s time to get creative. (Part 1 of 5)
This series of posts will detail why innovation continues to be the most important aspect of business growth, especially in today’s flat business world.
The advent of the internet and the freedom with which information travels today has leveled the business playing field, therefore it must be understood that creativity and innovation have become increasingly valuable for future business growth.
“The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be.”
— Isaac Asimov
The economy of the ‘information age’ (organized around a network of key corporations and processes) produced amazing growth in it’s ability to deliver the information we need, when we need it, at our fingertips even.
This series of events turned the business world upside down and it’s ripple effects have been felt as far as the reach of global economy itself.
And then all of a sudden we reached a point where the amount of information being produced became too much to process - productively, at least. That time is now. Distraction and lack of productivity are at an all time high, due at least in part to the surge.
In addition to swimming in this information and attempting to separate the good stuff from the rest, consumers are now connected to folk all around the world on social networks. This phenomenon continues to shed light on the fact that it’s been proven time and again that the human brain is only capable of maintaining roughly 150 or so relationships at a given time.

Since we now live in an age where we can have access to an ever-growing universe of information, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week it only makes sense that we would inevitably find ways to get better at processing all of it.
This very recent point of metamorphosis has seen us begin to transition toward a new type of thinking.
What do us humans always do when we need to save time or make life easier? That’s right! We build better tools.
Innovation is the key ingredient to this tool-building. Another time-tested fundamental aspect to human social culture is our ability to reason and then create a device that will do some of the work for us, freeing us of labor and time, extended capital, etc. In the end, as always it all comes down to human economics.
In this series of posts I’ll break down the concept of innovation and get you thinking about how to look at this crucial aspect of business with respect to the new economy - the attention economy.
Part 2 coming tomorrow.
